Allergies

About 1 in 4 Americans, suffer from allergies, many people think of sneezing, a runny nose or watery eyes. Those are some symptoms of allergies; however, an allergic reaction is actually the result of several events occurring within your immune system. The immune system is the body’s defense mechanism against different substances in our air, food, and environment. An “allergen” is any substance that can trigger an allergic response. The allergy is the symptom of the underlying problem that can cause many conditions. Common allergens are pollen, mold, pet dander, food, dust mites, and insects. Antibodies help capture unwanted invaders, however, people who have allergies have an antibody called Immunoglobulin E, al,so known as IgE. When allergens enter the body, reactions may occur and allergen-specific IgE antibodies are formed. Allergies are hereditary. If one parent has allergies, their child is 48% likely to develop allergies. If both parents have allergies their child’s risk is about 70% .
