Churg-Strauss Syndrome is an autoimmune disease in the Vacuities family, which are autoimmune diseases that affect the blood vessels of the body. Churg-Strauss Syndrome is characterized by an unusually large number of white blood cells forming, which inflames the blood vessels and creates nodular lesions. Typically this disease affects the lungs, beginning as severe asthma but because it affects the blood vessels and causes them to constrict, it can lead to damage of any number of organs in the body. Churg-Strauss Syndrome is rare and non-hereditary, non-transmittable. It most commonly affects men with the onset of the disease occurring after the age of fifteen.
Symptoms of Churg-Strauss Syndrome
Asthma is the calling card of Churg-Strauss Syndrome, usually developing a while before the other symptoms of the disease are obvious. Other early signs of Churg-Strauss Syndrome are the development of allergies or the worsening of pre-existing allergies, and nasal polyps sometimes affecting the sinuses. Some people may see weight loss and fever as well. In the later stages, sufferers may experience fatigue, weakness, lesions forming, a skin rash, muscle and joint pain, and the development of nerve pain. Churg-Strauss Syndrome can affect the liver, heart, and kidneys as well as the lungs.
