Advanced Alternative Treatment for Lupus
Lupus (Lupus Erythematosus)
Lupus is an autoimmune disease which can affect the blood vessels, nervous system, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and connective joints on the body. Lupus causes the body’s immune system to attack itself and because of varying reactions to this, the symptoms range greatly. It occurs nine times as often in women than in men, particularly in women between the ages of fifteen and fifty. There is no one cause for Lupus but there are many environmental triggers such as extreme stress, infections, hormonal changes such as those experienced during puberty, and exposure to sunlight. Some people have a genetic predisposition to the disease but no one gene has been identified as the sole carrier.
Symptoms of Lupus
The range of symptoms of Lupus is so wide that the disease is occasionally called “the great imitator” as it can mimic other illnesses and therefore is sometimes misdiagnosed. The most common symptoms include fatigue, malaise, fever, joint pain, and inflammation of internal organs, which can cause many related complications such as endocarditus, pulmonary emboli, and pleural effusion among others. As many as 30% of those with Lupus develop dermatological problems that often manifest as a malar rash or “butterfly rash” across the cheeks and nose. Some may suffer from neuropsychiatric complications such as cognitive dysfunction or dementia-like symptoms, anxiety disorders, seizures, and headaches.
