Advanced Alternative Thyroid Cancer Treatment

Stop feeling helpless – you still have options!

There are now more than 250,000 people in the U.S living with thyroid cancer. In the last 5 years, the incidence of thyroid cancer has increasedthyroidcancer by more than 20%. Thyroid cancer can occur in all ages, however people who have had radiation therapy to the neck area are at an increased risk.

Although the first symptom of thyroid cancer is often a nodule in the thyroid region of the neck, many adults have small nodules in their thyroids and under 5% of these nodules are found to be malignant. Sometimes the first sign is an enlarged lymph node. Later symptoms that can be present are pain in the anterior region of the neck and changes in voice. Nodules should be of particular concern when they are found in children or those under the age of 20 since presentation of benign nodules at this age is less likely.

Types of Thyroid Cancer:

1) Papillary carcinoma - This is the most common thyroid cancer and is usually found affecting women of child-bearing age. It has a high cure rate of 90%, as it spreads slowly and has the least tendency to spread of all thyroid cancer.

2) Follicular carcinoma – This type of thyroid cancer accounts for 30% of all cases and is the most likely to metastasize or recur. It is more common in older people and, if diagnosed in the early stages, has a high long-term survival rate. This type does not usually spread to the lymph nodes, but it can spread to veins and arteries and appear in the lungs, bone or skin.

3) Medullary thyroid cancer - This is the third most common type of thyroid cancer and is usually located in the central lobe of the thyroid. It arises from the C cells in the thyroid which are responsible for making the hormone calcitonin. If diagnosed early, it has a high long-term survival rate. This type tend to spread to the lymph nodes earlier than papillary or follicular types do.

4) Anaplastic carcinoma- This type is also known as Giant Cell and Spindle Cell cancers and is the most serious type of thyroid cancer. Anaplastic carcinoma spreads very early and can invade nearby structures such as the trachea. Long-term survival rates are significantly lower compared to other types of thyroid cancer since it does not respond to radioiodine therapy.
